Last week's menu went very well. I think that menu planning is definitely a way to keep us on budget and to keep me from wondering what I am going to make for dinner. This week is another week of closing shifts for my husband so I will be in charge of making dinner for 5 of the 7 nights. Here's the plan:

Monday - Chicken Parmesan

Tuesday - Carnitas Tacos (using leftover pork)

Wednesday - Cheesy Potato Soup

Thursday - Shrimp, fries, and broccoli

We are entering a new phase in our life so I am going to try something new. My husband, Chris, is going back to work after almost 5 years as a stay at home parent. While we are sad that Daddy won't be home as much, we are truly blessed to have my mom watching our children. So in an attempt to stay on grocery budget and to not be running around like a crazy person because I don't know what I am making for dinner, I am going to try menu planning. Here is our first menu plan for this week!

Monday - Lemon Pepper Chicken, jasmine rice, and broccoli

Tuesday - $5 Domino's Pizza (Tasty Tuesday event at our apt complex), cake and ice cream for Lauren's 7th Birthday!

Wednesday - Spaghetti, salad

Thursday - Tacos with all the fixings

Friday - French Toast and Eggs, Strawberry Banana Smoothies

Saturday - Chili and party munchies at Lauren's Birthday Party

Sunday - Leftover night

I am hoping that this will help me get a hang of doing the grocery shopping again and to utilize what is in my pantry first. When I went grocery shopping today, I first checked my pantry to plan my meals. After I inventoried the pantry, I made a list of what I needed to complete the meals. This is a huge money and time saver at the store! Just stick to your list and you won't overspend!

Protein Stock Up

Monday night the kids and I ventured out to Safeway and Harris Teeter. There wasn't a whole lot in the ad that I was interested in this week so I just concentrated on a meat stock up and a few great deals. If you're wondering why there isn't ever produce in my pictures, it is because I usually spend $20-30 on deals each week and my husband spends the remainder of our budget on dairy and produce at Wegmans. Wegmans has the best quality produce and the best everyday pricing.

I had a $3.50 OYNO from Safeway expiring from a granola bar deal I did a few weeks ago. I didn't see anything deal worthy in the ad except chicken. I can always use chicken!

Combining Coupons and Promotions to Save Money

Many people ask me how I save so much money with coupons. If you go to the store with a coupon for a product, you will save the value of the coupon. This is a good start but there are more ways to maximize your savings. The key is to use a coupon when the item is on sale to get the best deal. You buy as many of the product you will need to get you to the next sale. This way you will never pay full price. I take this even a step further. I am always on the look out for rebates to combine with my coupons and sales. Here is an example of how I combined a promotion, sale, coupon and rebate to maximize my savings.

During the holidays, I received a $10 off your next purchase of $10 or more at Best Buy. So my hubbie and I went to the store to look for a gift to purchase for Christmas. At Best Buy, we purchased two Blu-Ray movies for my mom and her fiance. Here is a breakdown of the Blu-Ray pricing.

1. Buy 2 Blu-Rays (regularly priced at $29.99 and $24.99) - current total is $54.98
2. Minus $10 off sale on one movie and $2 off the other - current total $42.98
3. Best Buy was running a promotion if you bought select movies where you would receive a $5 gift card at check out - current total $37.98
4. Minus $10 for reward certificate - final total $27.98 for 2 Blu Ray movies

So using sales and promotions, I saved $27! But it gets better...there was a rebate for one of the movies. If you purchase 2 Classico Pasta Sauces and Eat Pray Love, you would receive a $4 rebate. :) I was at Target last week so I checked the price of the pasta sauce. While shopping I noticed a coupon on the Classico Sauce, purchase 2 Classico Alfredo Sauces and receive a free Classico Red Sauce. Here is a breakdown of the transaction.

1. Buy 3 Classico Sauces (on sale for $1.84, $1.79 and $1.79) - current total $5.42
2. Minus $1.84 using the Buy 2 Classico Alfredo Sauce and get Classico Red Sauce FREE - current total $3.58
3. Minus $1/2 Classico Alfredo Sauce from the Sunday Paper - Final Total $2.58

By combining sales, promotions, coupons and rebates, I received $60.40 of merchandise for $26.56! That is a savings of 56%!!!! All I did was pay attention and I cut the expense in half! Totally worth it to me. :)

The Leaning Tower of Pasta

One of the goals for 2011 is to actively post to my blog. I virtually abandoned the blog about 6 months ago when we moved. Life got in the way and I never committed to posting. But that is all about to change! For my first blog post of 2011, I present the Leaning Tower of Pasta.

This picture includes 37 boxes of pasta that I was able to obtain for absolutely FREE! My hubbie was kind enough to stop on his way home from work to pick up the last 10 boxes. Mueller's Pasta was offering a .55/1 printable coupon on their website. Unfortunately, the coupon is no longer available. I paired the coupon with a sale at Harris Teeter and voila FREE pasta! Most printable coupons only allow 2 prints per computer but the coupon on the Mueller's website had, from what I could tell, unlimited prints.

Saving Money at Safeway - Day After the Beach Edition

Sunday I was dog-tired from a fabulous day at the beach with my hubbie and littles. The last thing I wanted to do is go to the grocery store - sans hubbie. He was at work. But with a little planning, I was able to get in and out of the grocery store quickly. You can do it too! This is what I did to make my life easier.

1. I prepped my grocery list on Thursday night by matching my coupons to the sales ad. I knew that I wouldn't be home on Friday night so I did this ahead of time.

2. I checked my favorite blogs to make sure I didn't miss any great deals.

3. I went to Safeway's website and created my shopping list using their weekly ad. Their site is soooo easy to use. :) All you do is click the items you want to ad and print.

4. The most important thing of all when shopping with children. I promised them a treat if they were good!

Here are a couple of the great deals I was able to snag....

Sears Spend $50 Get $50

Sears is having an awesome deal right now! Spend $50 on men's apparel and receive $50 in Sears Come Back Cash. The Sears Come Back Cash is a store certificate. The only hitch is the Come Back Cash can only be used on more men's apparel. The rebate runs from 6/11/10 to 6/20/10 and can be submitted by mail or online. You can shop on the Sears website or in the store. Remember to shop through Ebates to earn an extra 4% if you decide to purchase the items online.

We went over to Sears this morning because my husband needed some work pants. We were able to get him 2 pairs of pants and a belt for just over $50. I will submit the rebate online and once we receive it, he can get another $50 of clothes. Woo hoo! Nothing like spending $50 bucks on a $100 bucks worth of clothes!

We stopped at Staples tonight to take advantage of a rebate offer on paper. Paper is essential for printing coupons and I usually get mine for free. :) There is a rebate on Hammermill Paper until 6/12. Each ream of paper is $1 after rebate. Limit 2 reams.

I saved 97% after sales and coupons. Plus it gets even better. I have a $6 rebate WYB $10 worth of ground beef. After coupons, discounts, sales, and rebates, I will have paid $10.71 for $76.22 worth of food and cleaning supplies! That is a savings of 86%!!!!

Sorry about the blogging hiatis. My life has been more than busy the last few weeks. We moved this past weekend. We love our new place! But we moved from a 4th floor apartment so it was quite an adventure. We are so thankful for all the friends and family who helped us move.....couldn't have done it without you! We were moved in by Sunday and then Monday I was hit with some sort of body ache/chills/fever flu. Not so much fun. :( I am on the mend but still moving slowly. I have $36.00 in rewards from recycling my ink cartridges. You get $3 per cartridge and you can recycle up to 10 cartridges a month. At the end of the month, they email you your reward. I have $18 in rewards from February and $18 from March. Staples paid me to bring home the following stuff. :)

I had another great Safeway trip this morning even though a couple of things didn't work out. They wouldn't take a Safeway coupon for the coke with a Safeway SuperCoupon. No problem...I like to follow the coupon rules. I just wasn't aware of this one so I learned something new today. :) I also had an e-coupon not work...no problem. Still had a great shopping trip! I went over to Target on my lunch break yesterday to pick up Valentine's Day treats for the hubs and kiddies. While I was there, I thought I would take advantage of a great deal on razors. Target has Venus Embrace razors on sale for $6.99 this week and when you buy 2, you get a $5 gift card. Great deal but when paired with coupons and rebates you get a money making deal. :) Here's the rundown...

Purchase must be made between 2/12/10 and 3/12/10. Funny thing about this all? I didn't even know about the rebate until AFTER I did the deal. Talk about lucky. :)

As you can see, I paid $0 out of pocket for the body wash and I will be receiving $15 by mail-in rebate. $15 MONEY MAKER! Wondering how I will get $15 bucks when I paid nothing out of pocket? Manufacturers generally calculate rebates by the price of the product BEFORE coupons. So using coupons, sales, and gift card deals just got me 3 FREE body washes AND $15. Sounds like a good deal to me!

Printable Rebates

If you have been reading my blog, you know that I love, love, love rebates. One of the types of rebates that I complete are through beer manufacturers. The majority of the rebates are no beer purchase required (NBPR). I usually find beer rebates at the grocery store but Coors Light has decided to offer a rebate on their website. This is the first printable NBPR rebate I have ever seen. :)

There are four rebates available here. Two of the rebates are NBPR required. These rebates are so easy to complete. Make sure your state is listed as participating and take a look at this post from last year if you would like help with completing them.

My daughter has a birthday party to attend this weekend so I made a trip to Target on my lunch break to grab a gift. While I was there I planned on getting some cereal and juice. Unfortunately, they were all out of the juice that would have cost me 50 cents a bottle. :( They did have the cereal I was looking for though.

This is a great example of why I love Target! You can stack coupons. Don't know what stacking is? Here is a quick rundown....stacking is when you use a store coupon and a manufacturer's coupon on the same item. So I grabbed the hubs some cereal for FREE. Want to know how I got FREE cereal?

I was concerned this month because I knew it was going to be difficult to stay under my monthly budget with all the holidays and busyness in December. December has 4 weeks so my budget was $320.00 ($80 X 4). I did go over a bit but with the help of last month's overage of $42.66 and $40.67 that I received in food item rebates this month, I was only $5.14 over my budget! Not too bad considering that I hosted Christmas Eve dinner for 11 family members this year and hubbie made a not-so-cheap New Year's Eve dinner of shrimp and steak fajitas. :) Here is how I did:

Monthly Food Budget: $320.00

December Grocery Purchases: $408.47

Rebate Checks Received: $40.67

Remaining November Grocery Budget: $42.66

Purchases minus Rebates/November Remaining: $325.14

Over by $5.14. :( Oh well, I will just have to work harder next month. My budget for next month will be $400.00 since January has 5 weeks. I will start with $394.86 because I was over for December.

I have never been a big Safeway shopper but they have recently had some awesome deals that I have taken advantage of. Safeway is unique in that you can load digital coupons onto your club card AND they can be used in conjunction with a "paper" coupon. I have known about this for awhile but have not tried to take advantage of it. I was inspired to give it a try the other day when my friend told me how much she was saving at Safeway (thanks, Lisa!). Some examples of the great deals I got using e-coupons and paper coupons together.

As you see, you can load e-coupons from different sites. When you purchase an item all the e-coupons loaded on your card for a particular item will be used. I was also able to get 2 cans of Dole Tropical Fruit for 25 cents each and 3 boxes of Chex Cereal for $1 each. :)

If you are a Safeway Club Card holder, you can load coupons to your card from Softcoin, Shortcuts, PGeSaver, and Cellfire. Safeway even has e-coupons on their site, which is where I found the e-coupon for the Dole fruit. I am loving Safeway e-coupons and can't wait to take advantage of them again.

For the month of November, I spend $344.84. This is $24.84 over budget. But I received $67.50 of rebate checks in the month of November as well. All rebate money received was for food purchases. If you account for rebates received my monthly food budget looks like this:

Rebate Checks Received: $67.50

This means that I was actually under budget by $42.66. Success! I love coupons and rebates!

Another Kraft Keep the Jingle in Your Holiday Rebate

In October, I posted about the Kraft Keep the Jingle in Your Holiday Rebate. Well, Kraft has issued another rebate! Same terms just different dates. Purchase any 10 participating Nabisco crackers, Easy Cheese, or Planters nuts and receive $10 via mail in rebate. The items must be purchased between 12/1/09 and 1/31/10. Requests must be received by 2/15/10. You can print a rebate form HERE. There is also a printable $1/2 Nabisco crackers coupon available. Remember you can print 2 coupons per computer.

I plan on taking part in this rebate again. I will be on the look out for a great cracker sale to stock up for our pantry and Christmas. :)

I will see what I end at next week and then I will reevaluate to see if we should continue with the $80 budget or increase it to $90. Another money saving practice that I have recently adopted is menu planning. My hubbie and I sit down weekly and plan our menu. He is the cook afterall so I have to plan the menus with him. We look at what we have on hand in our freezer and pantry then we plan our meals around it. This is what is on the menu this week.

Money Saving Idea - What I do with all this ground beef :)

As you have noticed I purchased a lot of ground beef over the weekend. What am I going to do with all this ground beef?

As a money saving method, I divide the beef into individuals packages and freeze it for dinners. Most people use 1 lb of ground beef per meal whether it is sloppy joes, spaghetti, tacos or stroganof. Most recipes will call for 1 lb of meat. About a year ago, I reduced the amount of meat used in each meal to 3/4 lb. I found that we had an extreme amount of leftovers after every meal. So much that a lot went to waste and was thrown out. Since we only have 2 adults eating and 2 small children, there is still more than enough protein in our meal and we STILL have enough leftovers for at least 2 individual lunches.

Reducing the amount of meat used in each meal saves us money and reduces the amount of wasted food we have. If I had divided the meat into 1 lb. packages, I would have enough for 9 meals. By dividing it into 3/4 lb packages, there was enough for 12 meals!!!!

$80 Weekly Challenge

Before I started "couponing," I had no set grocery budget. A big no-no! I estimate that we were spending around $150 a week on groceries. Looking back that was an insane amount of money. Since I started using coupons and watching sales, I have been able to reduce that to around $100 a week. This includes all food, tolietries, diapers, wipes, etc.

I am challenging myself starting this month to reduce that amount to $80 a week. I really think I can do it. :) While my budget is $80 a week, I am going to be flexible with that as long as I stay within the monthly budget of $320 ($80 X 4). Obviously if the month has five weeks, I will increase the budget to $400 ($80 X 5). So if I go under one week, I will move my overage to the next week and if I go over one week, I can reduce my spending the next week. I plan on reporting my shopping totals each week. My week will start on Friday since that is payday for us. Wish me luck!

*6 pieces of chocolate covered fruit from Edible Arrangements. You had to become a fan of Edible Arrangements on FaceBook and were emailed a coupon for a FREE box of chocolate covered fruit. We had strawberries and apples. YUM!

*A box of Au Gratin potatoes from Betty Crocker. I requested a free sample from Betty Crocker a few weeks ago and when I opened my mail on Saturday, there was a full size box of Au Gratin potatoes in it! There was also a coupon for $0.50 off one box of Betty Crocker potatoes. Paired with a sale or triple coupon event this will equal another free box. :)

*A coupon for a FREE bottle of Herbal Essences shampoo or conditioner. I am so grateful for this one! I have sensitive skin and can only use a few kinds of shampoo and conditioner....this happens to be one I can use. :)

*NOT PICTURED - FREE Chipotle! My mom and I stopped at Chipotle on Saturday to get lunch and they were having the BOO-rito Event. I had no idea! Chipotle was giving away free entrees for Halloween. Yesterday after my daughter's soccer game (who by the way scored 2 goals!!! Woo hoo!!), we made a stop at Staples. Since I print a lot of coupons, I go through a good amount of ink and paper. The Staples Rewards program is a great way to get FREE products. Staples will give you $3 for every ink cartridge you turn into to them to recycle. You receive a $3 credit on your Staples Rewards account and at the end of the month they will mail or email (you choose the method you receive it) the rewards certificate. You are allowed to turn in a maximum of 10 ink cartridges a month.

Every couple of months, HT will sell there raw frozen shrimp for Buy One Get Two Free. We were down to our last half bag so the sale was perfect timing. When I received the HT weekly ad email this week, there was a E-VIC deal listed for HT Reserve Angus Top Sirloin steak. Buy a family pack and get $5 off. Here's how I did.

FREE No Yolk Noodles and FREE Pepperidge Farm Crackers after MIR

Today I sent out two mail in rebates. The first rebate was for No Yolks Noodles. Our family is a big fan of beef stroganof. When we make this dish, we use No Yolks noodles. There was a No Yolks MIR in the 10/4 SmartSource coupon insert. To receive the rebate, you must purchase No Yolks Noddles between 10/4/09 and 12/31/09. You will be reimbursed up to $2.50 for your purchase. I also paired this deal with a coupon. No Yolks are sold for $2.49 at Harris Teeter. I used a .75/1 printable coupon from here. HT doubles coupons up to 99 cents so the coupon doubled. Final price for the item was 99 cents. The rebate company will reimburse me for the original price of $2.49 for the product making this a moneymaker. :)

Has anyone tried Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals crackers? I have and they are delicious! On select boxes of Baked Naturals crackers there are Try Me Free peelie rebates. We bought our box last week and after I receive my rebate check, they will be FREE. If you pair this with a coupon, it could be another moneymaker. :) Anyone know if there is a coupon for Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals out there? I couldn't find one. :(

Try Me Free rebates are a great way to put products in your pantry for FREE. While there is only a small return on product rebates, I feel like it is worth it. My family gets to eat product for free and I'm adding money to my grocery budget.

The items must be purchased between 10/1/09 and 11/30/09. Requests must be received by 12/15/09. You can print a rebate form HERE. There is also a printable $1/2 Nabisco crackers coupon that you can print. Remember you can print 2 coupons per computer.

This is an awesome rebate for our house. Our daughter LOVES Wheat Thins and our son LOVES Ritz crackers. Both are a staple in our house. Plus with the holidays around the corner, I am sure we will purchase some Planters Nuts.

I received a $5 Target gift card for purchasing 5 Mott's products. I will also mail away for this $5 rebate because I purchased 3 SC Johnson products (Ziploc and Glade). The best part of the SC Johnson rebate is that you can mail away for it up to 3 times. Most rebates are limited one per household. We use a good amount of Ziploc bags so I will definitely mail away for the rebate the two more times I am allowed.

To sum this shopping trip up....after coupons, gift cards, and rebate, I will have paid $0.17 out of pocket (OOP). Free stuff is awesome!

Stockpiling plus Harris Teeter - E-Vic Savings

You might have noticed that I haven't had any amazing deal-catching shopping trips the last couple of weeks. There haven't been any incredible deals that I had to have. To tell you the truth, we haven't needed to shop for much. Our pantry and freezer are stocked up. We have plenty of meat, frozen veggies, side dishes, snacks, drinks, etc. The hubbie has been able to pick up milk, bread, and fresh produce after work a couple of times. Other than that, we haven't bought anything. My method of shopping is stockpiling. We don't only eat what I post on this blog. As I mentioned before, we have a stockpile of food in our freezer and pantry. Though if anyone sees an amazing deal on ground beef, let me know. I am on the lookout for a GREAT ground beef deal so I can stock the freezer back up. :)

I did head to Harris Teeter this morning to grab 2 newspapers. Coupons! Got have my coupons. :) I always buy 2 newspapers because I like to have multiple coupons if there is a good deal out there. While I was at Harris Teeter, I picked up a can of Campbell's Chunky New England Clam Chowder soup (my hubbie's fav) for 88 cents (price for non-EVIC members was 4/$6). This was the E-Vic Item of the Week. Every week there is one item that is SUPER cheap with E-Vic members. This week it was Campbell's Chunky Soup. Every couple of weeks I will get an email for a item that is FREE to E-Vic members. In recent weeks, I have gotten a free container of baby wipes and a free bottle of PowerAde. I love FREE stuff!

Hubbie bought grapes and bananas last night on his way home so I will send away for the rebate and they will now be FREE! Who said there weren't coupons for produce? :P

Mail-in Rebates (also known as MIRs)

One of my favorite ways to make extra money is Mail In Rebates. Yes, I think it is fun to find mail in rebates. :) Most of the MIRs that I submit are from beer and wine companies. This week alone I received (3) $10 checks in the mail from MIRs. Thank you Bud and Miller! Here are two of the checks I received this week:

And get this! Most beer and wine rebates do NOT require you to purchase beer or wine. They do sometimes require you to buy specific products. Some of the examples of items that I have seen on Beer/Wine MIRs include chicken, beef, seafood, salty snacks, bread, produce, and deli items. The list goes on and on! These are everyday items that I buy for my family. How do I organize all my rebates?

1. I keep all my receipts together in a small rubbermaid bin. Once I find a rebate for an item, I can go to this bin and look for the item on one of my receipts. I bought the item anyway so sending away for a rebate is just a bonus!

2. Beer MIRs are usually found on a display of beer. Most often there is a poster that is attached to a stack of beer. The MIR is on this poster.

3. Wine hang tags are found around the necks of wine bottles. The last tag I found on a wine bottle was a rebate for chicken, beef, or seafood. NO Wine Purchase Required. I had just bought a ton of chicken at an awesome deal on this Harris Teeter trip. I simply circled the item on the receipt and mailed away the rebate form.

4. All rebates have date requirements so make sure your receipt date falls within the guidelines.

5. Most rebates take 6-8 weeks before you receive a check in the mail. But as I mentioned before I don't go out of my way to buy specific items to qualify for a rebate. These are items I would have purchase if there was a rebate or not.

Because I send away for so many rebates, I do maintain a spreadsheet that lists the rebate, date mailed, amount, and date check was received. I keep this spreadsheet because I like to be organized. My mom mails away for almost as many rebates as I do but she doesn't track them. So to each his own! I don't think she has ever had a problem receiving payment from the company....but because I like to be crazy-organized, I prefer to keep a spreadsheet. This way I know how much I am "making" by mailing away for MIRs.

I apologize for the lack of blog posts the last few days. Yesterday was our little man's 3rd birthday so we were quite busy getting ready for his party that night. Not to mention that our daughter had soccer pictures and a soccer game yesterday morning. The party went off without a hitch and little man was so excited about his cake and all his fabulous presents. Thanks to my family for coming over for cake and ice cream! Ok on the to the coupon information. :)

Make sure you pick up a Sunday paper today. There are usually 2 coupon inserts in the Sunday paper - RedPlum and SmartSource. But today there are 3 inserts - RedPlum, SmartSource and P&G. I usually buy 2 papers so that I have multiple coupons for stocking up. Take a look here if you are interested in what coupons are in the inserts today. There may be some regional coupon value differences but this will give you a basic list of what coupons to expect. I know for a fact that there is a $1 off Luvs diapers coupon. I am excited about that one since baby boy wears Luvs diapers.:( Still working on the potty training.

Chris and I were able to go out to dinner last night to celebrate our anniversary. Thanks to my in-laws, Maw and Paw for watching the kids! We ate at Dogfish Head Alehouse in Fairfax. It was a pretty decent run especially since I didn't have a coupon for the diapers. Also you will notice, I used both Target coupons and a Manufacturer coupon on Breyers Ice Cream. Target’s policy allows you to use one Target Coupon AND one Manufacturer coupon on the same item. What a great policy! This is called “stacking.” I try to stack coupons as often as possible and since we needed ice cream for our little boy’s birthday this weekend….it worked out perfectly. One of the ways I make supplementary income is SwagBucks. What is SwagBucks you ask? SwagBucks is a search engine. I use their site to do all my regular searching on the web. You can even download a toolbar to use and easily search. When you search using SwagBucks you are periodically awarded their currency - "SwagBucks." You can then use the SwagBucks to purchase prizes. There are a ton of prizes available on their site i.e. video games, posters, DVDs, books....you name it.

My favorite prizes by far are the gift cards. There are many gift cards available to purchase with your SwagBucks...Starbucks, Target, Barnes and Noble, even Mastercard. My favorite gift card is for Amazon.com. They are only 45 SwagBucks for a $5 gift card. I have cashed in my SwagBucks for $30 worth of Amazon.com gift cards over the last 3 months. The only thing I have to do to earn $30 from Amazon is use SwagBucks as my search engine. That is $30 FREE....I didn't have to do anything extra to earn them.
